IMMIGRANT INTEGRATION, MONITORING EARLY SIGNS OF RADICALISATION, AND THE POTENTIAL OF MENTORING
The pilot edition of the PPBW Review “PLATFORM” places a special emphasis on radicalization and its associated challenges. One of the featured articles is authored by Dr. Magdalena El Ghamari, a Collegium Civitas lecturer and expert in terrorism, Islamic extremism, and radicalisation. Her article is titled “Immigrant Integration, Monitoring Early Signs of Radicalisation, and the Potential of Mentoring.”
Dr. El Ghamari argues that immigrant integration must go beyond merely providing material living conditions. She highlights that promoting values such as tolerance, respect for diversity, and fostering social bonds are essential components of successful integration. These elements, she explains, can act as a strong defence against radicalization. Dr. El Ghamari stresses the importance of monitoring early signs of radicalization, emphasizing that early detection of potential threats enables preventive actions on both individual and societal levels. As radicalization processes often evolve gradually, she underscores the necessity of having the right tools and knowledge to identify these signs early
Dr. El Ghamari also points out that mentoring can assist immigrants not only in adapting to their new environment but also in fostering relationships and social ties that reduce the risk of exclusion and isolation. Mentoring programs, in particular, can play a key role in preventing radicalization, especially among younger immigrants who are more susceptible to radicalization processes.
PPBW 2024 Review – An Interdisciplinary Approach to Radicalisation
The PPBW 2024 Review is entirely dedicated to the issue of radicalisation and ways to counteract it. As noted by the authors, radicalization is a problem that requires multisectoral cooperation, knowledge exchange, and the development of modern tools and counter-strategies. Since 2016, the Polish Platform for Homeland Security (PPBW) has been involved in various initiatives aimed at building a society resilient to radicalisation.
The publication is divided into three main thematic blocks: Knowledge, Needs, and Solutions. It includes articles from both academics and practitioners addressing the issues of radicalisation and security. The publication also touches on initiatives such as the EU Knowledge Hub on counter-radicalization, which fosters international cooperation in this field.
This edition aims to inspire further research, discussions, and actions related to preventing radicalization. Its content is based on the experiences and expertise of professionals like Dr. Magdalena El Ghamari, who have been engaged in the study of radicalisation, its causes, and effective prevention methods for years.
