We are pleased to announce the publication of the article “Academia as a Driver of Change: A Bibliometric Analysis of Pro-Environmental Behavior in Higher Education Institutions” in the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education. The article was co-authored by Prof. Dr. Walton Wider (INTI International University, Malaysia), Dr. Katarzyna Iwińska (Collegium Civitas), Jiaming Lin (INTI International University, Malaysia; Quanzhou University of Information Engineering, China), Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Fauzi (Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah, Malaysia), Dr. Syed Far Abid Hossain (BRAC University, Bangladesh), Leilei Jiang (INTI International University, Malaysia; Jinken College of Technology, China), and Lester Naces Udang (Shinawatra University, Thailand; University of the Philippines Diliman, Philippines).
The study provides a comprehensive overview of pro-environmental behavior (PEB) research within higher education institutions (HEIs), mapping key trends and identifying future challenges. By analyzing 198 journal articles from the Web of Science, the authors used co-citation, bibliographic coupling, and co-word analysis to identify influential publications and forecast trends in PEB research.
The findings revealed three key clusters:
- value-driven environmental behavior
- intention-based environmental behavior
- green organizational practices and employee PEB
Additionally, the study highlighted universities’ important role in fostering sustainable practices through educational programs and campaigns. The authors conclude that strategic, PEB-oriented actions are essential due to the social responsibility of higher education institutions in promoting sustainability.
This research offers valuable insights for HEIs, helping shape effective policies and interventions to encourage sustainable behavior and reduce environmental impact. The study emphasizes the growing responsibility of universities to educate and empower a generation conscious of climate leadership and sustainable development.
