Special Adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Special Envoy for the Prime Minister, New Zealand’s Representative to the Palestinian Authority.
Sir Jim McLay was most recently (2009-2015) New Zealand’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. He led the New York end of New Zealand’s successful campaign for election to a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2015-2016 term.
From 1993-2003, Jim McLay was the New Zealand Commissioner on the International Whaling Commission and chaired the Commission’s Finance and Administration Committee.
He was a Member of the New Zealand Parliament from 1975 to 1987. During this time, he served as Deputy Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Attorney General and Minister of Justice.
After retiring from politics, he held a number of managerial positions in the private sector before joining the diplomatic service.
In 1987, he received the Queen’s Service Order (QSO) for public services. In 2003, he was made Companion of the Order of New Zealand (CNZM) for services to conservation. In June 2015, he was made Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM) for services to the State and business.
