COMPETITION FOR THE POSITION OF SCHOLARSHIP HOLDER (MA or PHD LEVEL) IN THE NCN OPUS PROJECT

“Commemorating the Holocaust in the ‘Post-Witness’ Era: Counter-Monuments and the Collective Dynamics of Memory-Making”

The Rector of Civitas University announces a competition for the position of scholarship holder (MA or PhD level) in a project financed by the National Science Centre (OPUS grant), on “Commemorating the Holocaust in the ‘Post-Witness’ Era: Counter-Monuments and the Collective Dynamics of Memory-Making,” carried out at Civitas University (contract no.: UMO-2024/53/B/HS6/02858).

Scholarship Information:

  • Grant period: 24 months.
  • Planned start date: October 1, 2025. or as soon as possible thereafter,
  • Monthly scholarship amount: PLN 5,000.

Requirements:

  • Status of an active master’s degree student or a current participant of a doctoral school (fields of study: sociology, ethnology, anthropology, linguistics, cultural studies, media and communication or related),
  • Knowledge of research methods in the social sciences, including qualitative methods and basic quantitative methods,
  • Interest in ethnographic research, critical discourse analysis and corpus data analysis,
  • Very good, documented knowledge of English in both speaking and writing (the primary language of communication in the project),
  • Knowledge of Swedish at a level allowing data analysis and research cooperation within and beyond the project,
  • Motivation to conduct scientific research and willingness to work in an international research team.

Knowledge of Polish is not essential.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the project manager/leader in conducting research planned for stages I and II of the project, including:
  • collecting data from within the media, political and institutional fields (including building source corpora),
  • conducting preliminary discourse analysis of data and preparing fieldwork documentation,
  • archiving and preliminary processing of data from ethnographic research and their material as well as socio-semiotic analyses,
  • Collaborating with the research team in preparing publications and reports,
  • Participating in organizational activities and dissemination of project results.

  • A copy of a diploma confirming education or a current certificate of study progress,
  • CV including information about education and any academic and related activities (with information about, in particular, academic activities, participation/work in research teams, participation/organisation of conferences, foreign trips within the university, research projects, and publications),
  • A cover letter indicating interest in the topics of the research project and the applicant’s key research interests (including information about e.g. the topic of a bachelor’s thesis or planned master’s/doctoral thesis – including application of qualitative methods such as critical discourse analysis, ethnographic research, and if applicable quantitative methods),
  • Certificate of the current status of second-cycle or PhD studies (in Polish or English),
  • Optional: a reference letter drawn by the supervisor, academic advisor, or another person with knowledge of the candidate’s research competences.

COMPETITION FOR A POST-DOC POSITION IN THE NCN OPUS PROJECT

“Commemorating the Holocaust in the ‘Post-Witness’ Era: Counter-Monuments and the Collective Dynamics of Memory-Making”

The Rector of Civitas University announces a competition for the position of POST-DOC in a research project financed by the National Science Centre (OPUS grant) on “Commemorating the Holocaust in the ‘Post-Witness’ Era: Counter-Monuments and the Collective Dynamics of Memory-Making,” carried out at Civitas University (contract no.: UMO-2024/53/B/HS6/02858).

Terms of employment:

  • Position: Post-doc researcher (full-time),
  • Employment period: 34 months,
  • Planned start date: October 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter
  • Salary: PLN 9,600 gross/month.

Requirements:

  • Completed doctoral (PhD) degree in sociology, ethnology, cultural anthropology, linguistics, or in related disciplines in social, cultural and religious studies obtained not earlier than January 1, 2018,
  • Doctoral (PhD) degree obtained at a higher education institution other than Civitas University (UC, formerly known as Collegium Civitas), and in case of a doctoral degree at UC, at least a 10-month, continuous and documented postdoctoral fellowship/appointment at a different institution than the host institution and in a different than that where the doctoral degree was awarded,
  • Experience in conducting social science research using qualitative methods, with particular emphasis on experience of ethnographic research, using critical discourse analysis, and working within the framework of urban studies,
  • Documented academic achievements, especially publications, based on qualitative research methodology, with particular emphasis on ethnographic research, critical discourse analysis, or research within the framework of urban studies,
  • Experience in working in research teams,
  • Knowledge of Polish, English, and German at a level enabling research and analysis of source materials (minimum B2) and efficient collaboration within research project.

Additional requirements:

  • Experience/participation in international and/or interdisciplinary research projects and teams
  • Knowledge of Swedish will be an advantage.

Responsibilities:

  • Participation in the empirical and analytical stages of the project, including discourse analysis, field research, and archiving of research data and materials,
  • Collaboration with the research team in the preparation of project publications and reports,
  • Participation in organizational activities and dissemination of project results nationally and internationally,
  • Support in research data management.

Documents required from the applicants:

  • Copy of the diploma confirming the doctoral degree,
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • List of publications (authored monographs, chapters in edited collections, academic articles, conference proceedings, etc.),
  • At least 1-2 samples of published work consistent with the research focus and key themes of the project,
  • List of academic and research activities (participation in national and international conferences, national/international research internships/scholarships, conducting research using qualitative methods, including critical discourse analysis, and/or in the field of urban studies, participation in research projects with clear indication of the role and tasks performed).
