We are delighted to introduce Offstage: A Second Career, a compelling new book co-authored by our colleague Ms. Dobrosława Choryńska-Chudy, Head of the Collegium Civitas Academic Career Office, and Ms. Ewa Warchoł. Published by the National Institute of Music and Dance, this publication sheds light on the inspiring journeys of dancers who successfully embarked on new career paths between 2017 and 2022. The book is available in both Polish and English, making it accessible to a wider audience.

This book offers a rich collection of personal stories from dancers who were part of the National Institute of Music and Dance’s Career Transition Program. These narratives, complemented by stunning portraits taken by Kuba Jóźwiak, showcase how the end of one career can seamlessly lead to the beginning of another, equally rewarding chapter. Through these stories, the book illustrates that the skills and experiences gained in one profession can pave the way for success in another, regardless of age or background.

Dobrosława Choryńska-Chudy emphasizes that the experiences of these dancers resonate beyond the world of dance, offering valuable lessons for individuals across various professional fields. The stories captured in “Offstage: A Second Career” highlight the challenges and triumphs of acquiring new skills and adapting to new professional environments, ultimately providing hope and inspiration to those considering a career change.

The Career Transition Program for Dancers, launched by the National Institute of Music and Dance in 2015, was designed to support dancers in continuing their professional lives after retiring from the stage. The program offers scholarships that fund additional education, courses, and workshops, helping dancers transition smoothly into new careers. Recognizing the evolving needs of the dance community, the Institute expanded the program in 2023 to include younger dancers who wish to enhance their qualifications while still actively performing. This initiative provides them with the tools to prepare for future career opportunities, with financial support available for various training and courses.

In both programs, dancers benefit from personalized consultations with career advisors who guide them through educational planning and help them align their talents and interests with market demands. These advisors play a crucial role in ensuring that the dancers’ transitions are as successful and fulfilling as their previous careers on stage.
