This year marks a significant milestone as Poland commemorates 20 years since its accession to the European Union. The enlargement in 2004 stands as a pivotal moment in the history of the EU, as it welcomed not only Poland but also the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovenia, Cyprus, and Malta into its fold.

In honor of this occasion, Professor Stanisław Mocek, Rector of Collegium Civitas, shares his insightful reflections on the evolving Polish perspectives towards the EU.

In a recent interview with the Polish Press Agency, Professor Mocek, a distinguished sociologist and media scholar, highlighted the transition from initial Euro-enthusiasm to a more nuanced and critical Euro-realism among the Polish populace. He emphasized that while Poles recognize the advantages of EU membership and the tangible benefits it brings, they also maintain a discerning eye towards EU bureaucracy.

Professor Mocek further emphasized the benefits of EU membership, including economic growth and enhanced security, while also acknowledging the challenges posed by regulatory frameworks. Additionally, he referenced the latest research findings from reputable centers, which indicate that approximately 60% of Poles identify themselves as pro-European, with a smaller percentage expressing strong opposition to the EU, and the remainder adopting a neutral stance.

As Poland reflects on its two-decade journey within the European Union, it underscores the importance of continued dialogue, engagement, and critical reflection in shaping its future within the European community.
