We are proud to announce the publication of a significant academic contribution by our faculty member, Prof. Ewa Nowicka-Rusek, in collaboration with Professor Maciej Witkowski from WSB University. The paper, titled “Exploring Roma Ethnic Identity: The Role of the Romani Language in Poland”, provides an in-depth analysis of the beliefs of the Roma community in Poland concerning their mother tongue. Published in the renowned Liverpool University Press, the text challenges conventional assumptions about the centrality of the Roma language to their identity.

The research draws inspiration from a theoretical model developed by Elena Marushiakova and Vesselin Popov, examining the correlations between knowledge of the Romani language and the construction of Roma ethnic identity, particularly in Central Eastern Europe. The focus is on understanding the meaning attributed by the Roma community in Poland to their knowledge of the Romani language in shaping their ethnic identity, particularly in the context of language abandonment.
