In the recent publication in the Qualitative Sociology Review (October 31, 2023), Dr. Finkielsztein unveils the intricate world of senior ballroom dancing in the article “Between Sport and Leisure: Competitive Senior Ballroom Dancing as Serious Leisure.” The study, based on qualitative research within a Warsaw dancing club, meticulously examines the motivations, attitudes, and practices of senior ballroom dancers (aged 30 and above).

Positioning senior ballroom dancing on the serious leisure spectrum between sport and leisure, the research characterizes it as a liminal case, oscillating between recreation and a competitive approach. Utilizing qualitative research methods, including interviews and participant observation, the article showcases senior ballroom dancing as a serious leisure pursuit—a long-term commitment with substantial personal investment, creating a unique social world and fostering strong identification with the chosen activity.

Dr. Finkielsztein, an assistant professor at the Institute of Sociology at Collegium Civitas, is a pioneer in boredom research. This latest publication adds to his repertoire of work, showcasing his dedication to understanding the dynamics of leisure and its profound impact on individuals.
