HOW DO PARENTS REACT TO THEIR CHILDREN’S COMING OUT? ARTICLE CO-AUTHORED BY PROF. JOANNA MIZIELIŃSKA
Prof. Joanna Mizielińska, Collegium Civitas lecturer, and Prof. Danuta Uryga from the Maria Grzegorzewska University have co-authored an article titled “On the queer road: Parents’ reactions and strategies in response to their LGBTQI children’s coming out”, published in the renowned scientific journal Children and Youth Services Review, issued by Elsevier.
The article explores the parental experience of a child’s coming out as queer within a socio-political context where homophobia and transphobia remain significant societal issues. Drawing on two empirical studies conducted in Poland, the authors focus on two key areas:
- parents’ reactions to their children’s coming out as queer individuals
- the process of discovering one’s own identity as the parent of a queer person
The research data analysis highlights the complexity and evolving nature of parental experiences, as well as the diverse strategies parents employ.
