As the years pass, the void left by Edmund Wnuk-Lipiński feels even more profound. In today’s increasingly complex world, where simple answers are elusive, his absence is particularly palpable. Edmund Wnuk-Lipiński was never one to offer easy solutions or definitive prescriptions. Instead, his brilliance lay in his ability to pose challenging questions that encouraged us to see the world differently and think critically.

He taught us that true understanding comes from exploring diverse perspectives, examining alternatives, and imagining possibilities. His insights helped us uncover the underlying structures and forces that shape society and politics. With his guidance, we could peer beneath the surface of daily events to grasp the deeper dynamics at play.

As the founder and long-serving Rector of our university, Edmund Wnuk-Lipiński was instrumental in shaping an institution that embodies intellectual openness and freedom. His dedication and vision built a community that thrives on exploration and inquiry. For students and scholars alike, he was not just an esteemed academic, but also an inspiring mentor and a warm, approachable presence. His influence crossed disciplinary boundaries, resonating with sociologists, political scientists, philosophers, and beyond.

The university’s name and its guiding motto, “Gradu diverso, via una” – “Different steps, one path”—both reflect his belief that wisdom requires courage: the courage to ask difficult questions, challenge conventions, and seek truth in the face of complexity.

Edmund Wnuk-Lipiński, our Professor and friend, remains in our thoughts. His wisdom continues to guide us, and his kindness still inspires us.
