The sixth volume of the academic book series “Security and Society in the Information Age” has just been published. The volume brings together a series of research papers by participants in the Security and Society in the Information Age program held at Collegium Civitas.

Between June and August 2023 the ninth edition of the Summer School “Security and Society in the Information Age” was held at Collegium Civitas. In 2023 our university hosted 22 students from U.S. universities. The program combined the four-week intensive course on Central Europe & Security Issues with a two-week research internship with the Terrorism Research Center.

Designed and launched jointly in 2015 by SRAS (USA) and Collegium Civitas, the summer school program addresses global issues from unique perspectives. The participants also learned about Poland’s rich history and culture, visited Warsaw Rising Museum and POLIN Museum, participated in the study tours to Cracow and Berlin, Germany.

The students came from various American universities: Columbia University, Connecticut College, The Ohio State University, University of South Dakota, Southeastern Louisiana University, Portland State University, Miami University, Rutgers University, College of Charleston, Michigan State University, University of Washington, Texas A&M University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Seton Hall University, Minnesota State University, West Virginia University, University of Colorado Boulder.

During the research internship, the participants focused on a research project. They worked under the supervision of mentors: Dr. Paulina Piasecka, Dr. Vanessa Tinker, Dr. Monika Nowicka and Dr. Katarzyna Maniszewska. In result of the program the participants completed academic papers for publication in Security and Society in the Information Age, Volume 6.

The security issues explored in this volume include war, peacebuilding, information warfare, cybersecurity and terrorism – some of the most relevant topics in today’s security. The participants analyzed, among other issues – subjects relating to genocide and peacebuilding, cybersecurity, engagement of private armies in modern conflicts, energy security, terrorism and climate change, and solutions to some of those problems they defined and described. The papers show how interconnected and interdependent the world is and that education is a pillar of the solution to global challenges.

The editors of the volume are: Dr. Katarzyna Maniszewska, Dr. Monika Nowicka, Dr. Paulina Piasecka and Dr. Vanessa Tinker.
