Statement by Collegium Civitas regarding the teaching of classes in the summer semester 2020/2021

For the sake of the health of the entire Collegium Civitas community - students, teachers, research and administrative staff - pursuant to the statutory rights on the autonomy of higher education institutions and the regulations on ensuring safety, and in light of the current, still very serious pandemic situation in Poland and other countries, as well as the forecasts for the pandemic’s course, the Rector of Collegium Civitas has decided to extend online teaching to all summer semester classes in 2020/2021 for undergraduate and graduate studies.

Cooperation with Ukrainian Universities

On December 18 the closing event of the training “Internationalization of Higher Education” took place. Over 100 participants – representatives of 80 Ukrainian universities took part in the programme. The training was organized by Collegium Civitas in cooperation with the Center for Polish Education in Kiev as a part of a series of educational events which have already gathered over 500 participants from Ukraine during 6 editions held previously on-site in Warsaw and this year in the online mode due to the pandemic.

On December 1 the participants in the course “Terrorism and the Media” met online with Mr. Maciej Czajkowski, filmmaker, journalist and editor at Polish and foreign media outlets. His work for the BBC was the main focus of the discussion with Collegium Civitas students. Mr. Czajkowski was impressed by the diversity of the class – 30 students from countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, the US, Canada, Australia participated in the meeting. “Diversity is a superpower!” – Mr. Czajkowski said.

On October 1 a new research centre at Collegium Civitas was founded - Centre for Studies of Democracy, Civil Society and Political Elites. The formation of the Center responds to political changes related to the long-term political democratisation in post-communist Central and Eastern Europe, and to the growing challenges to liberal democracy and the EU, particularly from surges of nationalism and populist authoritarianism. The Director of the Centre is  Prof. Jan Pakulski, University of Tasmania and Collegium Civitas. The Chairman of the Consultative Council is Prof. Grzegorz Ekiert, Harvard University.

Rafał Trzaskowski, Collegium Civitas lecturer in the second round of presidential elections

Dr. Rafał Trzaskowski, Collegium Civitas lecturer since 2002, entered the second round of the presidential elections in Poland. The current Mayor of Warsaw received - according to exit polls -  30,4% and if this result will be confirmed in the official statement by the Polish Electoral Commission he will face the incumbent President Andrzej Duda in the second round of presidential elections on July 12, 2020. Security and Society Summer School goes online!

On-line Summer School at Collegium Civitas will be held between July 13 and August 24. The program is composed of two parts: coursework and research internship. Among the topics: hybrid threats, terrorism, COVID-19, cybersecurity, risk management. In result of the program a book will be published containing research papers written by the participants. Announcement concerning health risk prevention

Due to the epidemic of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus the World Health Organisation has declared a global public health emergency. The College of Rectors of Collegium Civitas has made a decision to suspend until further notice all travel of its staff and students to the countries indicated in the communication of the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate. Students who have visited within the last 14 days one of the following countries: China, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam and Italy are advised to stay home for 14 days from the date of their return. Any absence in class due to the travel will be excused (based on the travel documentation).

The book “Security and Society in the Information Age. Vol. 2” has just been published. The book features contributions by American students – participants in the Summer School and the internship program at the Terrorism Research Center (TRC) at Collegium Civitas. The Program “Security and Society in the Information Age”, composed of summer school courses and semester or academic year study abroad opportunities, aims at presenting global topics from the unique perspective of Central and Eastern Europe. The participants are also given the opportunity to embark on an internship at the Terrorism Research Center.
